Great Anthology Last Night

Paul Ricketts' tales of his "life in porn" were nigh on awesome. Lheila Oberman's account of an appearance as a topless Granny in the Daily Sport was capped by her actually passing around the clipping to the crowd. Kate Smurthwaite and Mathew Crosby were in typically fine form.

We return next Tuesday at 8:30. Again at the Comedy Pub. Special guest -- Ronnie Golden.

It is tonight.

I've decided to do it myself, a selection of stories from me, with no guests; an Edinburgh preview of sorts.

I don't want to sound like the boy who cried scarcity, but this may be the last London "Anthology" ever; hell, it could be my last London show ever. I don't expect that to send a shiver of "gotta get there" down anybody's spine but that's the way it is.

Should your spine be sending you any messages, the show is at 8:30pm at The Ship (upstairs), 68 Borough Road (at the spot where Borough Road meets Borough High Street), London SE1 1DX.

Near Borough tube station. (Also convenient to Elephant & Castle and even London Bridge.)

I'm gonna run it like the Free Fringe/Festival shows. Come in for free. Pay what/if you want when you leave.

About Chris (from Wikipedia)

Early career

Born in 1968, Chris Neill began his career producing comedy and entertainment shows for BBC Radio. Between 1993 and 2000 he worked as a producer for BBC Radio Entertainment and since then he has continued to make shows for BBC radio networks as a freelance. His productions include The Hudson And Pepperdine Show, Just A Minute, The News Huddlines, Weekending, Lee And Herring, Rainer Hersch's 20th Century Retrospective, Kit And The Widow - Sanitised For The Wireless, It's That Jo Caulfield Again, Quote... Unquote, Miranda Hart's House Party, Cambridge Footlights: A Retrospective, ... by Woody Allen, Clement Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Why The Big Pause? Talk Of New York and Sean Lock's 15 Storeys High.

Comedy roles and performances

In 2000, he started to appear as a panellist on shows such as Just a Minute, The Motion Show and Quote Unquote. He had a regular role as Chris, the live-in builder with a fear of completing any job, in the comedy series Linda Smith's A Brief History of Timewasting written by and featuring the eponymous Linda Smith. He also had cameo roles in Sean Lock's 15 Storeys High and The Hudson And Pepperdine Show, as well as writing and presenting a Radio 4 documentary about the legendary Round The Horne star, Betty Marsden. He is a regular newspaper reviewer on the Sunday morning news magazine programme, Broadcasting House, as well as being a weekly contributor to MacAulay & Co on BBC Radio Scotland. In 2005, 2006 and 2008 he co-hosted elements of MacAulay & Co along with Fred MacAulay and Sue Perkins as it was broadcast from the Spiegel Tent every morning during two weeks of the Edinburgh Festival.

Chris made his début as a stand-up comedian at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2002 with his show "Does It With Strangers" at the Pleasance, and he has returned to the Fringe in 2004 with "The BBC, Andrew Gilligan, And Me" and in 2005 with "Middle Class Misery — the Board Game", both also at the Pleasance, in 2006 with his show "Everybody Hates Chris (Neill)" at the Underbelly and in 2008 with "Chris Neill's Got A Bun In The Oven" at the Assembly Rooms. He was a core performer in Robin Ince's Book Club both in London and on national tour, and has also worked as a television warm-up.

Other roles

Chris also performs as a radio actor and as a voice-over artist. In 2006, he guest starred in the Doctor Who audio drama The Kingmaker. Currently he is planning and writing a new series for BBC Radio Scotland about his Scottish roots.

Hard to be angry with Time Out -- they've recommended every one of our shows for the last 7 months. However, 2 weeks ago, they had the wrong date in their online listing. Last week, they had 2 different online listings (one featuring the acts for next week's show) but nothing in the print edition. And today, the new issue came out and Sunday's show is not in it.

Which is a pity as it's in a new location with one of the strongest line-ups we've ever had:

Fresh from its Leicester Comedy Festival triumph -- where several of the audience members actually paid for their tickets! -- "Anthology" returns to the White Hart in Stoke Newington, this Sunday (the 22nd) at 8.

In recent shows, Alys Torrance told of an encounter with her grandmother's ghost, Jo Coffey of a special moment with Larry Hagman and Joe Bor of his two(!) bumholes.

Marian Pashley confessed to attempted murder, Richard Herring admitted he drilled a hole in a wall to ogle his sister's hot friend and James Dowdeswell testified that his school chum once entered their classroom and shot the history teacher.

It's a different kind of comedy show -- new, exciting and honest -- in which the audience gets a rare chance to hear true stories from comedians, unfiltered through their internal joke machines, told straightforwardly, as if by a friend (albeit a friend on a stage).

Another "Anthology" True Storytelling Show Tomorrow. (Thursday.)

We're recommended in Time Out and guests include Time Out Readers' Top 10 comedian, Terry Saunders, plus Lewis Schaffer, who's part of the current Big Joke Comedy Festival.

We'll also have Ewen Macintosh from "The Office" (and other big-deal endeavors including the scary stories show in Edinburgh), Helen Arney (to tell us about her audition to replace Carol Vorderman on "Countdown") and Storytellers' Club founder, Sarah Bennetto.

They are fine comic performers under any circumstances, but this time out, they'll be telling you true stories from their lives, so you'll gain new insight into some of your favorite performers and find yourself laughing at the truths they tell rather than the comedic tricks they play.

There'll be a bonus after the main show (if you feel like staying).

I'll be debuting (reading it off a piece of paper with in-the-moment embellishments) the second draft of the show I was developing to to fit the already-listed title of an abandoned slot in Edinburgh this year (part of the reason Richard Herring suggested me for the "Spirit of the Fringe" award). The original title was "I Need Your Love" but I think I'm going to change it to "Collateral Damage". (Yes, I know there was a movie with that name.)

The location is Inn on the Green, near Portobello Road and the Ladbroke Grove tube station.The address is 3-5 Thorpe Close, London, W10 5XL.

Show starts at 8 and costs £6. But if you use the secret code, "I don't want to pay £6," it'll be only £5.)

Previous installments have received 4-star reviews in Edinburgh and presented guests like Lizzie Roper, Scott Capurro, Paul Foot, Earl Okin, Chris Neill, Richard Herring, Matt Crosby, 3/4 of Pappy's Fun Club (w/the aforementioned M. "Anthology" at This Year's Edinburgh Festival -- Starts Tomorrow!

Matt Crosby of if.comedy nominee Pappy's Fun Club is the special guest. Sajeela Kershi will talk live for the first time about how she was in last year's if.comedy award-winner but couldn't tell anyone. (I may tell the story about wearing Jerry Seinfeld's trousers.)

Anthology is a comedy storytelling show. Each guest tells a ten-minute true story from life.

We've been recommended multiple times by Time Out and the Evening Standard.

Show's at 12:50pm at The Counting House, 38 West Nicolson Street.

to say that I particularly hope people will turn out for the first "Anthology" of our Edinburgh run.

The show will run daily from the 31st through the 25th (except for the 11th) but, as we're not listed in the main Fringe programme, the first installment would strongly benefit from your attendance. (It's the first show of the day in our venue, so flyering won't kick in -- in terms of effectiveness -- until day 2.)

If.comedy best newcomer nominee (for Pappy's Fun Club) Matt Crosby will be our headliner that first day. He's done a lot of these and he's great.

"Anthology" features top comedians telling true stories from their lives without first turning them into set-ups and jokes. Jo Caulfield, Scott Capurro, Paul Sinha and many others will be appearing this year. The acts who've signed on are listed in a separate post on this page.

There are similar shows this year, all worth your while, but we're proud to have been first, at the Fringe since 2005.

Angels Wanted

Hi Everyone,

I'm finding that, even with it being in a free venue and all, this here Edinburgh summer production is costing me more than I got.

A couple of years ago, I put out a call for contributions (& it WORKED!) but I figured it would somehow be wrong to do it again. Then I saw that Richard Herring had set up an online Edinburgh fund for people to contribute to and I figured if someone who has an income can do it, I can too.

The show will be really good this year. (The line-up thus far is in the post below this one.) And if you want, I'll put contributors names in a simple program along with whatever message you want the public to see -- just send it to me.

Last time, I asked for $20/10 quid and I guess that seems like not so much to ask, but -- of course -- even a buck would be well-appreciated and useful. (Well, not if only one person sent it, but if a BUNCH of people . . . )
